Record of the Day: Boston’s Expando Brain ‘Thyroid’
Hailing from the Boston indie scene of the 1980’s, Expando Brain played in a disjointed style, reminiscent of a three-year-old throwing a tantrum on a supermarket floor.
In a similar vein to fellow Boston-ites, the great Mission of Burma, Expando Brain began as a pub band, gigging locally for the majority of its lifespan.
Career highlights include appearances on two infamous compilation albums, Beautiful Happiness (Sounds & Shigaku) and None Whatsoever (Vacant Lot Records) before recording one of the most innovative indie albums of the golden era of the 1980’s. Mother of God, it’s Expando Brain was released on Vacant Lot Records in 1986 to negative reviews, which clearly is a sign that this is one killer LP..
However, it’s the sonically unkempt second track, Thyroid, that’s worth the price of admission alone, and most worthy of today’s record of the day.
